Top Six Youtube Channels The Library Watches at the Circulation Desk
Youtube is a horrible wasteland of regretful decisions. But it's also a super fun garden of content, ever growing with people opening boxes and doing stupid shit. It's amazing.
The library watches a bunch of Youtube at the circulation desk because its almost impossible to block due to being owned by Google. Praise be the Google.
Here are some of our favorite channels, mostly about video games, movies, and nerdy things!
Game Grumps
Do you like video games? Did your cooler older brother like video games and would not let you play but would let you watch him and his friends play? Welcome to the subgenre of Let's Plays!
While not just videos of two funny guys playing old video games and talking, Game Grumps is mostly that. And they are some of the most irreverent and at times deep conversations by two introspective and hilarious guys, Danny and Arin.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past playthrough contains a warm and emotional discussion about Danny's depression and how he dealt with it. While that doesn't sound like fun, there's also plenty of dick jokes.
Comic Book Girl 19
Do you like Game of Thrones, Dune, and X-men? How about an interesting person talking about those things? What if she was artistically trained and attractive with a calming southern accent? Who doesn't like an attractive person explaining nerdy shit with passion?! Why is this not another Youtube Genre?
Danika Lee Massey stars in this webseries with her robot and Space Brain as they discuss all kinds of nerdy things online. I must admit I came to this channel because I wanted a full history of the X-Men Dark Phoenix Saga. I kept watching because, well, that's how crushes work. Then, finding myself far from my Southern homeland, I found listening to her talk with the Alabama twang a comfort, a reminder of friends back home. Doesn't hurt that her observations on current movies and pop culture are funny, engaging, and often spot-on.
CinemaSins
Making snarky comments about movies generates half of the internet. Why not make videos where you pick apart all the dumb and silly things that movies are guilty of? Call them sins and you have CinemaSins, home of the Everything Wrong With… series of videos.
Kevin Smith shared these funny commentaries on his twitter, and I was hooked. Reminiscent of Mystery Science Theater 3000, the hosts bring funny and insightful observations, even when the movie does not deserve it. I have no movie that epitomizes this channel, so I will just share the video wherein the turned their asshole behavior inward and counted their own sins.
Outside Xbox
Still want more video game fun but how about more British? Outside Xbox (and its sister channel Outside Xtra) can fill a whole week with Top Ten style videos, Let's Plays, Preview Shows, and Shows of the Week with specific topics, this channel talks about all things video games.
Starring three former video game journalists (although Jane may also be an ex-mad scientist) each video seeks to entertain and inform. Not gonna lie, the Top Ten lists drew me in, with specific topics like below (7 Heroes Who Lived Long Enough to Become Villains), this channel has turned me on to past and upcoming games I never would have looked at. Their Let's Plays also showcase a good group of friends willing to embarrass themselves and each other with exciting gameplay.
CineFix
Oh, you think you like movies? You think you have seen all the good things and can disect film like a champ? Hahaha, no. The people in charge of CineFix employ a wealth of knowledge to create several different series, including Top Ten Lists as well as Book VS Movie videos for all you bibliophiles out there.
I don't have much background on the hosts or people behind the scenes of this channel. The meaning behind these videos is not the personalities on display but the information. Look here not for friends, but for excellent videos on movies. Actually picking a video to epitomize the content was hard, as they are so uniformly well done that each is an example of the others. So I just picked the "10 Best Character Introductions of All Time." Have fun and remember to eat something while you watch.
Bad Lip Reading
Some guy took NFL, news, and other footage and overdubbed his voice so it matched the mouth movements while saying super silly shit.
That's all of it for this channel. It's hilarious and delightful. Here's three videos, ending with the best music video of all time.
